4 Sales Phrases That Cost You Deals
Most founders think deals stall because the buyer needs time, budget approval, or more information.
That is rarely the real reason.
In most sales calls, the damage is done by the language being used. Small phrases signal hesitation, pressure, or lack of direction. Buyers feel it immediately, even if they cannot explain why.
Here are four sales lines that quietly kill deals and the exact wording that works better.
1. “Just calling to follow up”
This phrase sounds passive. It tells the buyer nothing happened last time and you are checking in because you have to.
Say this instead: “Had time to get back to you?”
This assumes progress without pressure and keeps the conversation open.
2. “Does the price work for you?”
This turns price into the problem, even when it is not. Most buyers are reacting to value, confidence, or risk, not the number.
Say this instead: “How do you feel about the investment?”
This invites an honest response instead of a defensive one.
3. “Call me when you have time”
This hands control away and usually leads to silence.
Say this instead: “When is a good time to talk?”
Now the next step is clear and owned.
4. “Are you open to this?”
This creates fake agreement. Buyers say yes to be polite and then disappear.
Say this instead: “Are you opposed to this?”
This forces a real reaction and surfaces hesitation early.
The Point Most Sales Teams Miss
Sales is not about pushing harder or talking more. It is about using language that slows the conversation down and gives buyers space to tell the truth.
If deals keep stalling, fix the words before you change the offer.
